I was perfectly happy eating my cookie

JANUARY, 1988

I was with Mary at the bakery today, on our break, eating a peanut butter cookie, when "Luka", Suzanne Vega's new song came on. It had a strange effect on me. A sudden wave of excitement that one of my songs might be on the radio someday (if it could happen to her, it could happen to me), then a pit-of-the-stomache longing for it to really happen, then a dread that it's a huge longshot and may never happen. It really took me by surprise, the intensity. Mary asked me something and I had to collect myself to answer.

Before the song came on I was perfectly happy eating my cookie.
