WE ARE ALL BORN CREATIVE
I've met many people in my life who have the impulse and the desire to create, but are held back by doubt, fear, or shame. Those are all perfectly acceptable, understandable reasons to not take the risk of expressing yourself. But, I would argue that those are equally good reasons to take the risk. It's how we grow.
Helping others in their creative pursuits has been one of the most rewarding things I've done. We are all born creative. It's not something we have to learn. What we do learn is a lot of limiting beliefs about who gets to be creative. Unlearning them is a process that requires intention and courage.
I've been terrified a lot in my life: The first time I let someone read something I'd written. The first time I sang in front of another person. The first time I performed one of my songs. When I went to my first comedy open mic night, and heard my name announced as the next performer, I ran out the door. A week later I went to a different club, got on stage, and survived. That was my goal: to survive.
Every time I've pushed through the fear and resistance it's lead to growth. I've learned something about myself, about people, about life.
“Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow.”
— Kurt Vonnegut
The creative act, bringing something into existence - a song, a poem, a painting - is the closest thing to magic that I’ve ever experienced. And, after 40 years, it's still exhilarating. It starts with giving yourself permission to take risks. To try and fail. That requires being vulnerable, scared, and doing it anyway. Again and again. Keep showing up. Keep taking risks. Thats a lot to ask of yourself. It's so much easier not to do those things. But, when you do, it changes you. You feel differently about yourself. You see the world differently. You relate to others at a deeper level.
WAYS WE CAN WORK TOGETHER
If you’re interested in exploring your creativity, I’d love to be your encourager, your ally, your guide. I can teach you guitar, drums, songwriting, film scoring, music production. We could work on writing, storytelling, stand-up comedy. I can help you re-ignite a dormant creative practice, nourish an existing one, or venture into something completely new.
